Review: CTC Math

Math can be one of those subjects that stresses a child AND a parent out sometimes.  Thanks to CTCMath we don't have to stress anymore! This program is an online, video based program that can work for all the children in your home. We all know that price is a HUGE factor in the programs that we purchase and when we can make one purchase and have it work for all the kids that is a huge benefit.

My 13 year old son and I have been working through the  12-month Family membership this past month. One of the biggest benefits of this program for my son is that we can work in any of the grades that are offered. That is huge for my son who is all over the map so to speak. My son loved math and seemed to really been zooming along until multiplication came into play. That seemed to stop us almost in our tracks and I had to get creative and figure out how to continue on in math when we were struggling with those facts. This is where this program works great for us because I can put him in the grade I think is is, but I can adjust from there. He's going into the 8th grade, but is more on a 5th grade level in math. I have put him in the 5th grade, but as he works through the different sections I can move him up or down depending on his needs.  If he needs more work with his division facts I can have him go back to work in 3rd or 4th grade, but yet work in 6th grade in another area.  I am able to assign him tasks if I want or he can just work through the lessons as he likes.

Typically he watches the short video lesson where everything is visual like in a classroom and the student feels as though someone is teaching them one-on-one.  Then we move on to the daily questions.  Sometimes if my son feels he already understand the material he'll skip the video. I've told him that is ok if he meets his 80% goal and if he doesn't then he needs to go back and watch the video.  I think for most students that visual is huge in their understanding.  If he's done well then he moves on to the next lesson and if not then I sit with him and we redo it together or sometimes that's when I'll bring in some extra help.  . If my child is needing extra help I can go in and print worksheets and also add questions to the question bank.  The question bank is really neat because you can chose the sections that you want included, the number of questions that you'd like and the level of difficulty. You can then print this as a worksheet for the student or add it to their tasks.  This is a great way to get some extra practice in when there are those difficult sections.     The weekly reports have colored blocks that correspond to the percentages and that is helpful in knowing how he did just at a glance.

I can always know what my student has done, or not done in some cases, when I log into my parent account.  The above is a weekly report as well as I can see any awards my child has won and his daily activity.

When my son logs into his account he easily can see all the grade levels that are in this program.  We are a bit away from some of the higher level math classes, but it's great knowing that we have that support when we get there.  If Issac doesn't have any scheduled tasks then he knows to just click on the area that he left off the last time he worked. It's recommended to go through the sets in order as they do build on this skills from previous lessons. Like most children my son enjoys doing some of his work on the computer. In this day and age of technology we do need our students to understand how to use the computer and to be able to work their way through a program. CTCMath is great for helping those students even from an early age learn how to move through the steps to be successful in their schoolwork.

It took a little bit of time for me to really get into CTCMath and get a basic understanding of the program.  At first it seemed so difficult and I struggled to understand how to use it. Looking back now I'm not sure what struggle I had or what I was confused about. It's a pretty simple process of signing up, adding your students and how you'd like them to work and to get started. If you struggle with any part there is so much support given in this program that it's easy to get through the issue.  The  12-month Family membership has a ton of videos to help you easily walk through everything from setting up your students account, adding tasks, understanding the reports and much more.

I currently am now homeschooling only one student, but this is the type program I would have loved when I was still schooling three students. Many of our reviewers have larger families and you can check out how this program worked for them.  As always check out FacebookTwitterInstagramPinterest and Youtube for additional information
