Review: As My Mind Unwinds by by Jennifer Ervig

There are so many amazing devotionals out written by amazing people. I've noticed that when I'm feeling that maybe I'm not doing enough Bible reading or that life is not going well is when I go searching for a devotional. I think the thought process is that those small nuggets will help get me back on track! In this 31 day Devotional-Reflection Ride Jennifer Ervig compares the devotional to rehab. Now you may immediately think I'm not doing drugs because isn't that why most people go into rehab? I'm sure it's a huge majority, but we have so many different issues that happen in our life that we could use some additional help in figuring out.

Rehab is defined as “the action of
restoring someone to health or normal life through training and
therapy after imprisonment, addiction, or illness.”

Are there times in your life where you have felt you needed to be restored? I know that there are some things that have happened in my life just in this last year that I felt I needed help in restoring myself as a person. Often times when you are just badly hurt you need restoration. I had to think long and hard about did I want to be restored to the person I was when that situation happened or did I need a restoration to a different different me? Those are those hard questions where the answers don't come easy! More often than not we are in a spiritual battle and we need to remember that we can arm ourselves to protect ourself and our loved ones.   Ephesians 6:16 tells us "In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming  arrows of the evil one." We must not forgot to pray through this time as prayers provides us companionship and power through the Holy Spirit.  I love how Jennifer brings every day life into teaching us to be better, strong and more amazing people! How many people like to talk about clogged commodes? I would venture to say not many (LOL) Think about it though when there is a bad clog the commode  won't work. When sin and evil is in your life your life becomes clogged. Things don't flow correctly, it needs work to be fixed etc. I can say that I have NEVER thought about my life compared to a commode, but it makes so much sense. Once that clog is gone you are back to the good life and often times even better.

As you read through the devotions or the Reflection Ride as Jennifer calls it there are Jennifer's Coaching Questions to help you get the most out of each section. Here's the questions from the section regarding the "clog" :)

1. What miracle has God done for you lately? Honestly for me it was that my son was in a BAD car accident and he wasn't even injured. Looking at his car my immediate thought was it's a miracle that he is alive. He was never even knocked unconscious and was able to get right out of the car. He was able to go home that night to his wife and two young kids.

2. How are you sharing the experience of your miracle with
others? I talked about it with a few people, but this wasn't something I necessarily shared widely. I'm honestly in a guarded place right now with friendships, so I limited who I told.

3. How do you know God sees you, hears you and knows you? I know he does because he sees it all. I have witnessed him answering prayers and know that all mine aren't always answered, but he answers on his time.

4. What is clogging you and backing you up?
Certain relationships and activities. I've been through a bad situation recently that affected myself and 2 of my children. There were lots of lies, hurt feelings, slander and all in all people not behaving as they should. It's made me have to step by and rethink many things that have been a huge part of my life for years.

John 14:15 reads:
If you love me, keep my commands. It seems so simple when you read it, but yet it isn't always that simple (LOL) After reading this section there were some very heartfelt and provoking questions.

1. What is the difference between conviction and condemnation? I think of condemnation as others telling me or making me feel wrong. Conviction is when the Hold Spirit leads me to know what I am doing wrong.

2. If you read John 14:15 and then were asked “how’s that go-
ing for you?” what would your reaction be? Not as well as it could be, but not as bad either (LOL)

3. How can we look at John 14:15 as conviction rather than
condemnation? Reading the Bible and learning from it should teach us lovingly, like a parent, what we can change and do better. Conviction is done lovingly and condemnation is from judgment.

4. Why might someone consider obedience their love language
to God? They are showing their love to God by following his word.

I have truly enjoyed reading Jennifer's work and more often than not while I'm reading I feel I'm sitting in a room with a friend. She's open, honest and funny. Life can be serious, but we can also have fun. We need to be loving and kind to people, but also have those tough discussions that most run away from. If I'm behaving in a certain manner I NEED my friends to have my back and say hey, I think your wrong and this is why. We know we need to talk to people in a loving way, but the problem is that doesn't always happen! I highly recommend Jennifer's book As My Mind Unwinds-31 Day Devotional-Reflectional-Confessional Ride I was also blessed to read her book When My Mind Winds Up recently. These were both amazing and are books I'll go back to again and again in life. I can't wait to see what else she has instore for us.

** I received this book free for my honest opinion.
